Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has pushed back against criticism from former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), over his recent confrontation with naval personnel in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists at his Life Camp residence on Thursday, Wike dismissed Buratai’s remarks as misguided and accused him of distorting the facts surrounding the incident.
The clash, which involved naval officer Lt. A.M. Yerima, stemmed from a dispute over a piece of land in the Gaduwa District. According to Wike, the property in question was unlawfully acquired by former Naval Chief Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, and Yerima was acting on an illegitimate order by attempting to obstruct the FCT Administration’s enforcement.
Wike took particular issue with Buratai’s suggestion that his actions posed a national security threat and disrespected President Bola Tinubu. He rejected the idea that Buratai had any moral authority to demand an apology or lecture him on conduct. “This is the same man who, in 2019, allegedly instructed his GOC to interfere in my election and failed,” Wike claimed. “He even tried to eliminate me, and I survived. Now he wants to talk about decency?”
The minister went further, accusing Buratai of playing partisan roles during the APC presidential primaries. “He reduced himself to a polling agent for a candidate. And now he wants to speak on what a minister should or shouldn’t do? I find it laughable,” Wike said.
He made it clear that he stands by his actions and has no regrets. “I will not lose sleep over political opponents. Whether you’re in PDP, APC, or ADC, that’s your business. I’ve always been open about my support for President Tinubu, and I’ll continue to do what I believe is right.”
Wike concluded by urging all public officials to uphold the rule of law, regardless of their rank or background. “Let’s not twist issues with ethnic or political sentiments. The law must be respected by everyone.”
