Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to strengthen and empower the Nigerian Armed Forces in addressing the country’s security challenges.

The Vice President made the remarks on Friday during a special Jumma’a Prayer held at the National Mosque in Abuja, commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. Shettima emphasized that the Federal Government remains resolute in providing the military with the necessary resources and support to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protect citizens’ lives and property.

Paying tribute to officers and men who have lost their lives in the line of duty, the Vice President acknowledged their sacrifices as central to the peace and unity of the nation. “Our fallen soldiers paid the supreme price in defence of the country and would continue to be honoured for their bravery and selflessness,” he said.

During the prayer session, Shettima offered prayers for the repose of deceased military personnel and invoked divine strength and comfort for their families. He also sought protection and empowerment for serving officers and men as they confront ongoing security threats across the country.

According to the Vice President, consistent and sustained support for the Armed Forces remains a cornerstone of the administration’s broader strategy to overcome insecurity while fostering national unity and development.

January 15 is annually observed by the Federal Government to honour the Nigerian Armed Forces. In a recent development, the Armed Forces officially renamed the observance from “Armed Forces Remembrance Day” to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day” to reflect its dual purpose of celebrating serving personnel while remembering fallen heroes.

The event highlights the administration’s continued focus on bolstering national security, recognizing the sacrifices of military personnel, and ensuring that Nigeria’s defence forces are equipped and empowered to meet evolving security challenges.
