Vice President Kashim Shettima has reassured Nigerians of the unwavering commitment of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration to tackle corruption, revive the economy, enhance national cohesion, and strengthen the independence of the judiciary. Speaking at the national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, held on Monday in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the government’s dedication to addressing critical challenges and fostering a more inclusive and prosperous nation.

The conference, themed ‘Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,’ was organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development. Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Issues, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Shettima acknowledged that while democracy is not a perfect system, it remains the best form of governance compared to alternatives. He stressed the administration’s resolve to listen, adjust, and account for its stewardship in line with the demands of Nigeria’s democratic system.

“We will continue to seek to provide evidence of the values of the democratic system by, among others, fixing major weaknesses of our economy, securing our communities, fighting corruption, supporting free and fair elections, strengthening the independence of the judiciary, and improving national cohesion,” Shettima stated. He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, asserting that the country will rise to its full potential and become a key player on the global stage.

Shettima highlighted the administration’s focus on addressing economic challenges, improving security, and promoting transparency and accountability. He also underscored the importance of free and fair elections, judicial independence, and national unity as pillars of a thriving democracy. “I am convinced that Nigeria shall rise again, answer to its full potential, and lead the way to a future that has learned lessons from a difficult past,” he said.

The Vice President called on Nigerians to support the administration in its efforts to build a stronger and more resilient nation. He described the journey as challenging but ultimately rewarding, emphasizing that the Bola Tinubu-led government is deeply invested in the quality and sustainability of Nigeria’s democratic system. “We will listen and adjust where necessary, and we will account for our stewardship in all matters our challenging democratic systems demand,” he added.

Shettima’s remarks come at a critical time when Nigeria faces significant economic, security, and political challenges. His assurances reflect the administration’s determination to address these issues head-on and deliver on its promises to the Nigerian people. By prioritizing good governance, political integrity, and inclusive development, the APC-led government aims to restore public confidence and pave the way for a brighter future.

As Nigeria continues its democratic journey, the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and national unity will be crucial in achieving lasting progress. Shettima’s message serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility shared by leaders and citizens alike in building a nation that thrives on the principles of democracy and good governance.
