A festive evening in the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe turned to tragedy on Friday when a vehicle rammed into a crowd gathered for Christmas celebrations, killing at least 10 people and injuring nine others.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time at Schoelcher Square in the coastal town of Sainte-Anne, opposite the town hall and church. Locals, including families with children, had assembled for preparations ahead of holiday events, including the lighting of Christmas decorations.

According to local broadcaster Radio Caraïbes Internationale (RCI) and authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle and plowed into the group. Three of the injured remain in critical condition. Emergency services, including firefighters and medical teams, responded swiftly to the scene.

The driver remained at the site following the crash and was taken into custody. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, with preliminary reports suggesting possible factors such as a medical episode or impairment, though officials have not confirmed details. No evidence currently points to a deliberate terror attack.

The mayor of Sainte-Anne activated a crisis management unit to support victims’ families, and a period of public mourning has been declared in the community.

French President Emmanuel Macron and other officials have expressed condolences, highlighting the shock to the island during what should have been a joyous holiday season. The tragedy has drawn comparisons to a similar vehicle ramming incident at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, last year.
