The United States on Wednesday warned that it considers civilian ports in the Strait of Hormuz to be legitimate military targets, claiming that the Iranian government is allegedly using these facilities for military operations.

In a statement, the US military said the Iranian regime was reportedly operating along civilian ports in ways that threaten international shipping. “Civilian ports used for military purposes lose protected status and become legitimate military targets under international law,” the statement read.

The US also urged civilians in Iran, including dockworkers, administrative personnel, and commercial vessel crews, to avoid all port facilities where Iranian naval forces and military equipment are present.

This warning followed US military strikes on Tuesday that reportedly destroyed 16 mine-laying vessels which could have been used to block the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial sea lane for Gulf oil and gas exports. The action underscores escalating tensions in the region amid ongoing US-Iran conflicts and concerns over global energy security.

The development highlights the increasing risks to international maritime traffic and raises fears of a broader escalation that could affect global oil supply routes and the world economy.
