The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day. The announcement was made via the embassy’s official X page on Sunday.
The embassy explained that Presidents’ Day was originally established to honour the birthday of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Over time, the holiday has evolved to celebrate all U.S. presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history.
Highlighting Washington’s legacy, the embassy noted that he created the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became the Purple Heart. The medal continues to feature Washington’s image today.
Observed annually as a federal holiday in the United States, Presidents’ Day also recognises the influence of American presidents on global affairs.
