The government of the United States has announced a temporary easing of economic sanctions on Russia to allow stranded Russian oil shipments at sea to be sold to India. The decision was revealed on Thursday as part of efforts to maintain ility in the global energy market.

According to the United States Department of the Treasury, the move was authorized through a special license issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. The license permits the delivery and sale of crude oil and petroleum products of Russian origin that had already been loaded onto vessels as of March 5 2026.

Officials stated that the authorized transactions will remain valid until the end of the day on April 3 2026. The waiver also allows shipments involving vessels that were previously affected by various international sanctions regimes.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the short term measure was designed to ensure that oil continues to flow into the global market and prevent supply disruptions.

He emphasized that the waiver would not significantly benefit the Russian government financially because it only covers oil cargo already stranded at sea and does not apply to new shipments. According to him, the measure is meant to ease pressure in the global energy sector.

Bessent also linked the decision to broader tensions in the international energy market, noting that it could help reduce pressure caused by geopolitical developments involving Iran.

Sanctions against major Russian oil companies such as Lukoil and Rosneft were earlier imposed in November by US President Donald Trump in response to Russia’s ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

Since the start of the conflict, Russia has reportedly relied on a network of aging oil tankers with unclear ownership structures to move its crude oil around global sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and the Group of Seven.

The temporary waiver highlights ongoing efforts by global powers to balance economic pressure on Russia while preventing disruptions in the international energy supply chain.
