Tensions between the United States and Iran are escalating as both nations signal readiness for a potential confrontation in the Middle East. While indirect negotiations in Geneva between Iranian officials and representatives of US President Donald Trump continue, military preparations on both sides suggest diplomacy may be running out of time.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described recent talks as productive, citing agreement on guiding principles. However, US Vice President JD Vance stated that Iran has yet to acknowledge key American red lines. Behind the scenes, US air and naval forces have significantly increased their presence in the region, with reports indicating readiness for possible action within days.

Following last year’s conflict with Israel, Iran has accelerated repairs to critical missile infrastructure. Sites such as the Imam Ali Missile Base in Khorramabad and facilities near Tabriz and Hamadan have undergone reconstruction. Satellite imagery also shows rapid rebuilding at the Shahrud solid propellant missile production complex, potentially expanding Iran’s long range missile capabilities.

Iran is simultaneously fortifying its nuclear facilities. At Natanz and the Parchin military complex near Tehran, reinforced concrete and underground construction aim to shield sensitive sites from potential airstrikes. The 7th of Tir Industrial Complex near Isfahan, previously targeted and later sanctioned by the United Nations, has also been rebuilt.

Internally, Tehran has reshaped its security leadership. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei strengthened the Supreme National Security Council and established a Defense Council. Veteran commander Ali Shamkhani now plays a key role in wartime planning.

Military drills in the Persian Gulf, including temporary restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, underscore Iran’s message that any conflict would carry significant regional and economic consequences. Analysts warn that with both sides entrenched and heavily armed, miscalculation could ignite a broader war.
