The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2810 (2025), which extends the mandate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) until January 5, 2029. Established in March 2004, CTED is crucial in supporting the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) by assessing the implementation of important resolutions aimed at combating terrorism.

Resolution 2810 highlights CTED’s role in providing objective expert assessments regarding the execution of key Security Council resolutions, including 1373 (2001), 1624 (2005), and 2178 (2014). These evaluations assist member states in identifying and addressing deficiencies in their counter-terrorism measures and capacities.

Furthermore, the resolution emphasizes the significance of CTED in facilitating technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives, ensuring that member states are better equipped to counteract terrorism effectively.

The renewal of CTED’s mandate reflects the Security Council’s commitment to a coordinated global response to the evolving threat of terrorism. By extending this mandate, the Council aims to enhance international cooperation and support for member states in their efforts to prevent and combat terrorist activities.

It also underscores the necessity for ongoing oversight and assessment to ensure the effectiveness and adaptability of counter-terrorism strategies in response to emerging challenges.

The adoption of Resolution 2810 garnered support from various member states, highlighting CTED’s vital role in the international fight against terrorism. Its passage without opposition signifies a unified global perspective on the need for a strong and collaborative approach to counter-terrorism.

With the mandate extending until 2029, CTED is poised to strengthen its support for the CTC and member states, contributing to the ongoing efforts to ensure international peace and security.
