The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry has declared that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, as stated in a report released on September 16, 2025. The commission identifies that Israeli actions fulfill four of the five criteria for genocide defined in the 1948 Genocide Convention.

The reported actions include:

  1. Killing members of the group: The commission points to substantial civilian casualties resulting from Israeli military operations.
  2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm: It emphasizes the psychological and physical injuries caused by the ongoing conflict.
  3. Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction: This includes the blockade of humanitarian aid, destruction of infrastructure, and other measures leading to severe living conditions for Palestinians.
  4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group: The report brings attention to the destruction of reproductive health facilities and the adverse effects on maternal health.

Statements from senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, provide evidence of genocidal intent, as they are accused of inciting actions that contribute to the genocide.

In response, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the findings as “fake” and politically motivated, advocating for the dissolution of the commission. The report has sparked international outcry, with human rights organizations like Amnesty International calling for immediate action to halt the alleged genocide and hold perpetrators accountable.

As the conflict persists, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens, marked by significant loss of life and destruction. This situation has led to growing international pressure to confront allegations of genocide and to seek resolutions that protect Palestinian civilians while upholding international human rights standards.
