The Chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area (LGA) in Abia State, Azu Newman, has established a peace and reconciliation committee in response to growing tensions between herders and farmers in Obibor community. This proactive step aims to prevent a potential clash following the destruction of farm crops, allegedly caused by cattle belonging to herdsmen.
The incident, which involved the destruction of crops, sparked outrage among local farmers, particularly the youth, who are heavily dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods. The loss of these crops has created significant unrest, as the indigenous farmers demand justice and compensation for their losses. Fears of escalating violence and clashes between the two groups have prompted the swift action from the Ukwa West LGA administration.
Azu Newman’s decision to set up the peace and reconciliation committee is aimed at addressing grievances from both sides while ensuring that the situation does not escalate into violence. The committee, composed of representatives from both the farming and herding communities, as well as local leaders and government officials, will work to mediate disputes, promote dialogue, and seek a peaceful resolution.
In his statement, Newman emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony and coexistence in the community, highlighting that open dialogue and mutual understanding are critical in resolving conflicts. He urged both the herders and farmers to remain calm while the committee carries out its duties.
This initiative represents a crucial step in preventing further conflict in Obibor, promoting peace, and ensuring that all parties involved feel heard and fairly treated. By fostering cooperation, the Ukwa West LGA leadership aims to protect both livelihoods and the peaceful fabric of the community.
