Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi) reported being assaulted by security forces while campaigning in Gulu ahead of the January 15 presidential election. He claimed that he and his supporters were attacked with sticks and stones by individuals in police and military uniforms, resulting in several injuries requiring hospitalization, along with vandalism of campaign materials.

The Ugandan military responded by accusing Wine of conducting an illegal procession and campaigning outside permitted hours. A video released by Wine appears to show security personnel beating civilians, heightening concerns about political repression in Uganda. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk condemned the increasing crackdowns on opposition groups, highlighting that at least 550 members of Wine’s National Unity Platform were detained in 2025.

In light of the allegations, Ugandan police announced an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga termed the actions “regrettable” and pledged disciplinary measures if any officers were found guilty. The electoral commission also called for a thorough investigation and urged the police to exercise restraint during the election period.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of confrontations between opposition figures and security forces, with a notable prior incident in September 2024, where Bobi Wine was injured by police when shot in the leg with a tear gas canister during a clash. Such events have raised serious concerns about political freedoms and human rights in Uganda as the election approaches. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging adherence to democratic principles and respect for human rights from all parties involved.
