In an unexpected twist in the boxing world, heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has declared his immediate retirement from boxing. This announcement follows closely on the heels of news from promoter Eddie Hearn that Wembley Stadium was reserved for a blockbuster fight between Fury and fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua this summer.
According to Naija News, Joshua had expressed enthusiasm about facing Fury in 2025, despite neither fighter currently holding a major title. Both boxers have recently faced setbacks; Joshua was defeated by Daniel Dubois in his last bout, while Fury suffered back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury made his retirement known through a video posted on his Instagram account, stating, “I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I have loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this – Dick Turpin wore a mask!” The cryptic reference to Dick Turpin, an infamous 18th-century highwayman, left many fans puzzled, but the focus remained on the retirement announcement itself.
This isn’t the first time Fury has stepped away from the sport; he previously announced his retirement in April 2022 after defeating Dillian Whyte. However, that retirement was short-lived as he returned to the ring six months later for a trilogy fight with Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, once again capturing the attention and support of his fanbase.
The abrupt retirement announcement has thrown cold water on the much-hyped potential clash with Joshua, leaving fans and the boxing community in a state of shock and speculation. Given Fury’s history of retirement announcements followed by comebacks, there’s an air of uncertainty about whether this retirement will stick, or if it’s another strategic pause in his illustrious career.
