Turkish authorities detained 115 individuals in Istanbul, suspected of planning attacks on Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Istanbul Police Counter-Terrorism Department executed coordinated raids across 124 locations, apprehending most of the 137 suspects for whom arrest warrants had been issued. This operation was prompted by intelligence indicating that the Islamic State (IS) had called for action against non-Muslim communities during the festive period. Authorities seized numerous firearms, ammunition, and organizational documents, and the operation is ongoing as efforts to locate the remaining suspects continue.

The detainees allegedly aimed to disrupt holiday celebrations specifically targeting non-Muslim communities. Though authorities have not disclosed specific locations for the planned attacks, the operation underscores the persistent threat posed by IS in Turkey. The country’s strategic position and demographic landscape make it a focal point for IS activities, especially since it shares a long border with Syria, where the group has retained influence despite losing significant territory in 2019.

This operation highlights Turkish authorities’ commitment to proactively addressing potential threats and ensuring public safety during significant cultural events. The government’s measures reflect a broader regional effort to combat extremism and undermine the operational capabilities of such groups by targeting their financial networks and organizational structures. As the investigation progresses, additional security measures are expected to be implemented to protect public events during the holiday season.

The international community remains vigilant, understanding that extremist groups like IS may exploit festive periods for their agendas. Ongoing collaboration and intelligence-sharing between nations are essential in the collective fight against terrorism and for maintaining global security.
