The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Lagos State Chapter, has praised the approval of an N85,000 minimum wage, viewing it as a clear indication of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare in the state. In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, TUC Chairman Mr. Gbenga Ekundayo and Secretary Mr. Aladetan Abiodun expressed their appreciation for the governor’s recognition of the necessity to review the existing minimum wage.

While acknowledging the significance of the N85,000 offer, the union leaders emphasized the importance of the upcoming meeting scheduled for Monday, October 21, where discussions on this crucial matter will commence. They highlighted their hope that constructive dialogue would lead to a more comprehensive outcome that considers both the economic realities of Lagos and the contributions made by its workforce.

The TUC leaders expressed optimism about the forthcoming discussions, stating that principles of good faith, fairness, and mutual respect would guide the negotiations. They affirmed their readiness to collaborate with the government to ensure that the outcomes are not only beneficial to the workers but also sustainable for the state as a whole.

In their statement, the union leaders reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the negotiation process maintains high standards of transparency and accountability. They recognize the significance of upholding these principles, especially as they navigate the complexities of worker welfare in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

As discussions progress, the TUC remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of workers in Lagos. The approval of the new minimum wage is seen as a positive step, but the union leaders are keenly aware that further negotiations will be essential to achieve a wage that truly reflects the cost of living and the hard work of Lagosians. Their proactive approach and commitment to dialogue signal a strong determination to foster a collaborative relationship with the state government, ultimately striving for a brighter future for all workers in Lagos State.
