Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Advances in Senate Amid Political Turmoil and Elon Musk’s Criticism

The U.S. Senate passed President Donald Trump’s comprehensive legislative package, known as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” with a tie-breaking vote from Vice President J.D. Vance. This bill combines tax reform, border security, and defense spending, marking a significant victory for Senate Republicans and the White House. A key amendment—doubling a rural health care access fund to $50 billion—helped secure crucial support, notably from Senator Susan Collins. However, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the legislation would increase the national debt by approximately $3.3 trillion over the next decade.

The bill includes provisions such as making the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent and introducing new tax breaks, including eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits. House conservatives are concerned about the deficit impact, while moderates oppose deeper Medicaid cuts. Even if the bill passes the House, public skepticism remains a major hurdle for Republicans.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been a vocal critic of the bill. He described it as a “disgusting abomination,” arguing that it would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion” and burden American citizens with “crushingly unsustainable debt.” (cnbc.com) Musk also expressed disappointment that the bill undermines the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he previously led.

In response, President Trump suggested possible deportation of Musk to South Africa and hinted at revoking federal contracts, referencing Musk’s past reliance on government subsidies. The bill now faces a challenging path in the House of Representatives, where it must secure approval before being signed into law by President Trump. The ongoing political turmoil and the public feud between Trump and Musk add complexity to the legislative process, with potential implications for both the bill’s passage and the broader political landscape.
