President Donald Trump has issued a critical deadline for Hamas to accept a proposed peace deal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has persisted for nearly two years. In a statement on social media, Trump declared that Hamas must agree to the terms by Sunday at 6 p.m. Washington, D.C. time, warning of severe consequences if they fail to comply: “If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas.”
The 20-point plan, revealed by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, includes several major provisions:
- Immediate Ceasefire: Military operations will cease upon agreement.
- Hostage Release: Hamas is to release 48 hostages within 72 hours.
- Disarmament: Hamas must disarm and dismantle its military infrastructure.
- Israeli Withdrawal: Gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from major parts of Gaza.
- Humanitarian Aid: Unrestricted humanitarian assistance to be allowed into Gaza.
- Transitional Governance: An international-led transitional government, co-led by Trump and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, will oversee Gaza’s administration.
Hamas has confirmed receipt of the proposal and is currently consulting with Arab and regional partners for feedback, although some officials hint at the need for further negotiations before finalizing their response.
The conflict, initiated by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has led to over 66,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population. The humanitarian crisis has garnered significant international concern, with calls for a peaceful resolution. As the deadline nears, global focus remains on achieving an agreement to halt hostilities and foster stability and reconstruction in the region.
