Trump administration freezes $108M at Duke amid inquiry into alleged racial discrimination

The Trump administration has $108 million in federal research funding to Duke University, citing of racial discrimination through affirmative action practices. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) the funding following a joint letter from the of Health and Human (HHS) and the Department of Education, which Duke of engaging in racial preferences in hiring, admissions, scholarships, and other areas. The funding freeze has already led to hiring freezes and postponed expansion projects, with a high likelihood of staff layoffs and reduced research activities if the situation persists. Duke’s school has also reduced Ph.D. admissions to funding uncertainties. Researchers are raising alarms over the long-term on scientific and the of academic medicine.
