Real Madrid returned to winning ways in La Liga with a 3-0 victory over Athletic Club at San Mames, ending a run of three domestic games without a win.

Kylian Mbappé scored twice and set up Eduardo Camavinga’s goal just before half time. His first goal followed a strong solo run and came after a fine pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had recently been finding form in the starting lineup.

Shortly after the break Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury and was replaced by Raul Asencio. Reports now indicate he will be out until February and will join Ferland Mendy in the treatment room.

The 27 year old is expected to miss matches against Celta Vigo, Manchester City, Sevilla, Real Betis, the Spanish Super Cup, Levante, Monaco, Villarreal, Benfica and Rayo Vallecano.

Earlier in the season the right-back position appeared deep, with Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal both in contention. However, for much of this campaign coach Xabi Alonso has not had either player available.

Carvajal is not due to return until January, so Real look set to be without a natural right-back for the rest of 2025.Trent’s New Injury Leaves Real Madrid Thin in Right Back Position.
