In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Saturday along Dikko-Maje road, opposite Badeggi fuelling station in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, over 50 individuals perished due to a petrol tanker explosion. The tragedy has left the community in mourning and has once again highlighted the dangers associated with the handling of petroleum products in Nigeria.
Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander in Niger State, confirmed the devastating event to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna. He detailed that the catastrophe began when a tanker loaded with petrol lost control and overturned. As the fuel began to spill, a crowd quickly gathered, attempting to scoop the leaking fuel, oblivious to the risk involved. The fire erupted suddenly, engulfing those scooping the fuel and even those who tried to come to their rescue.
The scale of the disaster was further explained by Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). According to him, the explosion occurred around 9:00 am when an attempt was made to siphon petrol from the crashed tanker to another. The transfer was facilitated by a generator, which unfortunately sparked the explosion when it came into contact with the highly flammable PMS (Premium Motor Spirit).
In the aftermath, NSEMA, in conjunction with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Suleja LGA Emergency Committee, and numerous volunteers, have been actively involved in search, rescue, and recovery operations. The injured were promptly transported to hospitals for treatment, while the grim task of recovering the deceased’s bodies continued.
This incident not only brings to the forefront the lethal dangers of scavenging fuel from accident scenes but also questions the safety measures and public awareness surrounding such scenarios. The recurring nature of these accidents across Nigeria underscores the urgent need for better road safety education, stringent enforcement of safety protocols, and perhaps, stricter regulations on the transportation of hazardous materials like petrol.
The community of Suleja and the broader state of Niger are now left to deal with the grief of losing numerous lives to an accident that could potentially have been prevented with more awareness and caution. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the preciousness of life and the need for collective action to prevent such incidents in the future.
