The rising cost of living continues to put pressure on African economies, salary structures, and households, even as economic growth remains relatively resilient across the continent. While several governments have increased minimum wages, real living standards are still largely determined by purchasing power, which is steadily being eroded by inflation and rising prices of basic goods and services.

In many countries, income growth has failed to keep pace with living costs, leaving workers struggling despite wage adjustments. As of January 2026, the following African countries have the highest minimum salaries.

Leading the ranking is Morocco with a minimum wage of about 374 dollars per month. The country strong trade ties with Europe and the Middle East and its diversified economy helped it record 4.4 percent GDP growth in 2025.

Closely following is Mauritius at 371.75 dollars, supported by tourism, finance, and technology, with 3.2 percent GDP growth.

Tunisia and Algeria both offer minimum wages above 185 dollars, backed by mixed economies and strong energy exports respectively.

Egypt follows with nearly 150 dollars, while Botswana stands at about 142 dollars despite a slight economic contraction in 2025.

Cape Verde and Lesotho each record around 139 dollars, supported largely by tourism, manufacturing, and remittances.

Kenya posts 118 dollars with solid economic diversification, while Mozambique rounds out the top ten at about 104 dollars per month.

Although these countries lead in minimum wage levels across Africa, inflation continues to weaken purchasing power, meaning higher salaries do not always translate into improved living standards.
