Speculation over a possible defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified following the appearance of red caps bearing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signature infinity symbol within the Kano State Government House.

The red cap, long associated with President Tinubu’s political identity, has become a powerful symbol within the APC. Its sudden emergence among aides and loyalists of Governor Yusuf has been widely interpreted as a strong political signal, fuelling reports that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governor may be preparing to align with the party at the centre.

Over the weekend, an aide to the governor was seen wearing the red cap during a public event held at the Government House, attended by Governor Yusuf and other top government officials. Days earlier, photographs of another aide wearing a similar cap had circulated widely on social media, sparking intense debate and speculation across political circles in Kano and beyond.

Sources within the Kano State Government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard that the governor’s defection plans were already at an advanced stage. According to them, despite criticisms and mixed reactions from supporters and political stakeholders, there was “no going back” on the planned move.

The sources further revealed that recent developments within the Government House point to a gradual but deliberate alignment with the APC, suggesting that the appearance of the symbolic red caps may be part of a broader political transition strategy.

If confirmed, Governor Yusuf’s defection would represent a major political shift in Kano State, a key battleground with significant electoral influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. It would also mark a major boost for the APC as it seeks to consolidate power in the North-West region.

For now, the governor has yet to make an official statement, leaving political observers to read between the lines as symbolism and speculation continue to dominate the narrative.
