The political tension that has gripped Rivers State in recent months may be gradually easing following a late night intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The high level meeting is being viewed by political observers as a significant step toward restoring calm and unity among the state’s deeply divided leadership.

According to a report by The Nation on Monday, President Tinubu convened a closed door meeting with key stakeholders from Rivers State, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Other influential political figures from the state were also said to be present, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the President’s personal involvement in resolving the crisis.

While official details of the discussions were not made public, sources familiar with the meeting revealed that the talks focused on reconciliation and political stability in Rivers State. The report further stated that Governor Fubara accompanied Minister Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, shortly after the meeting, a move that many see as a symbolic gesture of rapprochement.

More strikingly, it was alleged that Governor Fubara appealed directly to Wike during the engagement, pledging that he would never show him disrespect again. This reported act of contrition has fueled speculation that both leaders may be willing to set aside their differences in the interest of peace and governance.

The prolonged rift between Wike and Fubara has had far reaching political implications in Rivers State, affecting governance and party cohesion. President Tinubu’s intervention therefore appears aimed at preventing further escalation and ensuring stability in one of the country’s most politically strategic states.

Although it remains to be seen whether the reported reconciliation will translate into lasting harmony, many stakeholders believe the President’s involvement could mark a turning point in the Rivers State political saga.
