Tinubu Orders Political Appointees To Resign Before 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31 2026.

The directive affects ministers heads of agencies and presidential aides and is aimed at ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws while promoting transparency and fairness in the political process.

According to a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation the order is in line with Section 88 subsection 1 of the Electoral Act 2026 as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.

The circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and released through the Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

It clarified that the directive applies to a wide range of officials including ministers ministers of state special advisers senior special assistants special assistants and personal assistants to the president.

The order also extends to directors general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals agencies commissions and government owned companies as well as other political appointees intending to contest elections.

The presidency said the move is necessary to prevent the misuse of public office and resources during the electoral process and to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants.

All affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the stated deadline.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections urging full compliance from all concerned.
