President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State governor, Chief Bisi Akande, describing him as a mentor, trusted ally and one of the most principled figures in Nigeria’s progressive political movement. The President’s message marked Chief Akande’s 87th birthday and highlighted his enduring influence on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

In his birthday message, Tinubu praised Akande’s integrity, honesty and moral uprightness, noting that these qualities have continued to inspire generations of leaders within the progressive fold. He described the former governor as a man of strong convictions whose personal example and clarity of purpose have helped shape values-based leadership in Nigeria.

The President expressed deep gratitude for Akande’s guidance, encouragement and support over the years, saying they played a significant role in his own political journey and eventual emergence as President. Tinubu also acknowledged Akande’s continued backing of his administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing his support as invaluable.

“Having Baba Akande in my corner as a partner and ally has proved tremendously helpful,” Tinubu said, adding that the elder statesman remains mentally strong, principled and unwavering even at the age of 87.

Reflecting on Akande’s long record of public service, Tinubu described him as a key pillar of Nigeria’s democratic development. Akande’s career spans decades, beginning with his work at British Petroleum before transitioning into politics under the ideological influence of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He served as Secretary to the State Government in old Oyo State, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic and Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.

Tinubu also highlighted Akande’s role as interim national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, noting that his leadership helped lay the foundation for the party’s historic victory in 2015, when it unseated an incumbent federal government.

The President concluded by praying for good health and renewed strength for Akande, describing him as a consistent advocate of democracy, social justice and good governance whose voice remains relevant in national affairs.
