New York City’s Times Square will kick off 2026 with a patriotic New Year’s Eve celebration featuring a red, white, and blue crystal ball, marking the start of yearlong festivities for the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The Times Square Alliance and the America250 commission have collaborated on this redesigned ball drop, which includes a symbolic post-midnight ascent, a first in 120 years, with another ball drop planned for July 3, 2026.
Chaired by Rosie Rios, the America250 commission is leading the nationwide celebrations, promising a grand event described as “one for the ages.” Complementing the Times Square festivities, the America250 commission is launching “America Gives,” a national service initiative aimed at achieving the highest volunteer participation ever in 2026.
This initiative encourages community engagement through various activities, such as fireworks, potluck suppers, contests, and the collection of oral histories from citizens.
The Times Square ball drop, a tradition since 1907, symbolizes the spirit of New Year’s celebrations, starting with a 700-pound ball designed by immigrant metalworker Jacob Starr. The current version, the Constellation Ball, was unveiled last year, weighing nearly 12,000 pounds and measuring about 12 feet in diameter.
These planned events are set to promote unity and pride among Americans as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, laying the groundwork for a year focused on reflection, celebration, and community involvement.
