Elon Musk is getting ready to take Tesla beyond just making cars. He wants the company to build its own chip factory, called a “terafab” to support Tesla’s growing use of artificial intelligence.
At Tesla’s 2025 Shareholder Meeting, Musk explained that current chip suppliers like TSMC and Samsung might not be able to keep up with Tesla’s future needs. So, he’s thinking about creating a massive chip-making plant to make sure Tesla has enough chips and electricity, which he says are the company’s biggest challenges right now.
Musk shared that Tesla’s long-term goal is to handle everything related to its AI hardware, from designing chips to producing them. He believes depending on outside companies could slow down Tesla’s progress in building robots and self-driving tech.
Right now, Tesla works with TSMC and Samsung to make its custom chips. Musk also mentioned talking with Intel about teaming up, but said nothing has been finalized. He added that even taking all the output from a partner factory might still not be enough to meet Tesla’s future demand.
Tesla’s new AI5 chip is almost ready for production. It’s built to run Tesla’s AI systems more efficiently and is meant for use in robots and self-driving vehicles. Musk said it uses about one-third the power of Nvidia’s Blackwell chip and costs much less. It’s designed to work well with Tesla’s own AI software while saving energy.
A newer version, called AI6, is expected to launch within a year and will offer double the performance.
Musk said the terafab would start by producing 100,000 chip wafers each month, and that number could grow ten times as Tesla’s AI needs increase. He told shareholders that this kind of scale is necessary to support Tesla’s future fleet of smart cars and robots. If chip suppliers can’t keep up, Musk believes building a huge factory is the only way forward.
