Tanzania’s President Mwinyi Introduces 2026 Development Plan Aimed at Economic Advancement

President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar presented a detailed development agenda focused on economic growth, infrastructure advancement, and improved social services. Building on the successes of 2025, the Revolutionary Government aims to exceed a 7.1% growth rate, enhance revenue mobilization, and prioritize tourism, industry, and investment.

A major focus for 2026 includes the construction of critical infrastructure such as roads, ports, and airports, along with expanding educational facilities and upgrading healthcare services. The government plans significant improvements at institutions like the Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital and the Binguni Cancer Treatment Centre.

Reflecting on 2025, President Mwinyi noted a rise in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6.57 trillion Tanzanian shillings from 4.78 trillion in 2021, with government revenue collection more than doubling to 2.104 trillion shillings. Inflation was maintained around 5%, showcasing effective economic reforms. Investment surged, with 1,657 projects worth approximately 20.2 billion US dollars registered, expected to generate over 87,600 jobs, while tourism saw a 27% increase in visitors compared to 2024.

Infrastructure improvements included the completion of 82.8 kilometers of urban roads and 247 kilometers of rural roads. Key projects nearing completion include the Mwanakwerekwe and Amani flyovers, and significant progress on several bridges.

In healthcare, funding rose from 17 billion shillings in 2020/2021 to 40 billion in 2024/2025, and the education budget increased significantly. The government constructed 35 modern schools, hired over 3,500 teachers, and expanded higher education loans to nearly 11,500 students.

To elevate economic empowerment, the government distributed interest-free loans totaling 50.7 billion shillings, benefiting women, youth, and persons with disabilities. Mwinyi called for active participation in upcoming celebrations for the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, concluding with wishes for peace, unity, and ongoing development in 2026.
