Taiwo Awoniyi, striker for Nottingham Forest, has shared the inspiring story of his rise from humble beginnings in Ilorin to playing in the Premier League.
Speaking to the club’s media team, the Super Eagles forward recalled the difficult conditions he faced while pursuing his dream as a young footballer. Awoniyi revealed that he often had to walk for about an hour each way to attend training sessions at the Unicorn Football Academy because he lacked money for transportation.
According to him, even getting proper football boots was a major challenge during his early days.
He explained that at times he had to improvise by collecting old or discarded boots and fixing them himself just to be able to train. Despite these challenges, Awoniyi remained determined to succeed in football.
The striker said his father later helped him with equipment, but the conditions were still tough as he regularly trained and played on sandy pitches and poorly maintained fields.
Awoniyi also revealed that he did not begin his football career as a striker. As a youngster he played in several positions across the pitch including defence and midfield before eventually settling into the role of centre forward.
His breakthrough opportunity came when he joined Liverpool FC. Although he did not play for the senior team, he gained valuable experience through loan spells across different European clubs.
Awoniyi explained that the period with Liverpool played a significant role in shaping his development as a professional footballer. After several loan moves, he eventually elished himself at Union Berlin in Germany before returning to England.
He later completed a move to Nottingham Forest, saying he was excited about the opportunity to play again in the Premier League and eager to experience the atmosphere at the City Ground.
However, the Nigerian forward has faced a difficult season with injuries and inconsistent form limiting his appearances. He has played only ten league matches and has largely played behind teammate Chris Wood in the squad.
His limited playing time also affected his chances at international level, as he was not included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the setbacks, Awoniyi’s story remains one of determination and resilience, highlighting how persistence and hard work can turn even the most difficult beginnings into a successful professional career.
