Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from the English Football Association following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Nigerian striker came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, marking just his second league goal of the season. In celebration, Awoniyi removed his jersey to reveal an undershirt bearing the message “God is the greatest.”

While he was immediately shown a yellow card for taking off his shirt, the display of the message could lead to further scrutiny under Premier League regulations. Rules governing player conduct state that footballers must not reveal garments displaying political, religious, or personal slogans during matches.

Under these guidelines, both the player and club may be subject to sanctions from the league, national association, or even FIFA, depending on the severity of the breach.

Despite this, Awoniyi’s case is widely considered less serious, as the message reflects a personal religious expression rather than a political or controversial statement. Football authorities may opt for a lighter response, such as a formal warning or a minor fine, instead of harsher disciplinary measures.

The incident occurred during a commanding performance by Nottingham Forest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a result that has intensified pressure on Spurs as they battle to avoid slipping further down the league standings.

As of now, the FA has not issued an official statement regarding any additional punishment, leaving the final decision pending.
