Popular Nigerian comedienne and skit maker, Apaokagi Maryam, widely known as Taaooma, has drawn public attention to the growing problem of illegal waste disposal on road medians in Lagos State.

In a video shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Taaooma highlighted heaps of refuse dumped on the road median along the Ikotun–Ejigbo–Egbeda axis of the state. Expressing concern, she questioned the situation in the area and called on the Lagos State Government and relevant environmental agencies to urgently intervene.

“What’s happening in Ikotun/Ejigbo/Egbeda axis like this?” she wrote, while tagging the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

The video showed piles of garbage occupying the road median, with residents and commuters moving about amid the unsightly and potentially hazardous waste. The post quickly sparked reactions from social media users, many of whom said the problem was widespread across Lagos.

Several residents claimed similar conditions existed in areas such as Shomolu, Mushin, Ketu, Oshodi, Surulere and Yaba, lamenting what they described as a breakdown in waste evacuation services. Some users alleged that LAWMA and private sector participation (PSP) operators had failed to collect refuse for weeks, leading to overflowing dumps, foul odours and fears of disease outbreaks.

Others expressed frustration that Lagos, once praised for improved sanitation, appeared to be sliding backwards. One user described the current situation as the dirtiest the city has been in years, while another claimed a neighbour temporarily relocated due to the stench and health risks posed by accumulated waste.

Taaooma’s intervention has renewed public calls for authorities to address waste management challenges in the state, as residents urge swift action to prevent environmental degradation and public health crises.
