Super Typhoon Ragasa struck Hong Kong on September 24, 2025, marking one of the most powerful storms in recent history. The typhoon caused extensive devastation, particularly at the Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel, located in the low-lying coastal area of Aberdeen. Around 6 a.m., massive waves breached the hotel’s protective barriers, flooding the lobby and causing glass doors to shatter. A video showed water flooding in, sweeping a guest off his feet as staff worked to evacuate others. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the hotel, which promptly began cleanup operations.
Elsewhere in Hong Kong, the storm uprooted hundreds of trees and damaged infrastructure, including the roof of a pedestrian bridge. Coastal areas saw severe flooding, with promenades submerged and debris strewn across streets. At least 60 individuals were injured and required medical attention. In response to the crisis, Hong Kong authorities issued Signal No. 10, the highest typhoon warning, which resulted in the closure of schools, businesses, and public transport. Flights were canceled, and many shops remained closed, prompting residents to seek refuge in temporary shelters. Rescue crews utilized inflatable boats to assist those trapped by the floodwaters.
The devastation of Typhoon Ragasa extended beyond Hong Kong, affecting Taiwan and the Philippines. In Taiwan, at least 17 people were reported dead, and 33 were missing due to severe flooding. The Philippines also faced fatalities, with at least 10 deaths linked to the typhoon, including fishermen caught in treacherous seas.
As recovery efforts continue, Hong Kong authorities are focused on restoring normalcy, clearing debris, and providing assistance to those impacted by the storm.
