Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has clarified that Victor Osimhen’s early exit from Nigeria’s World Cup playoff against DR Congo was prompted by injury concerns—not internal conflict.
Osimhen, who had been a standout performer in the semifinal against Gabon with a brace, was replaced by Akor Adams of Sevilla at the start of the second half. The decision sparked speculation, with some reports suggesting a halftime fallout in the dressing room, allegedly linked to a miscommunication between Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman.
However, Chelle addressed the rumors in a conversation with journalist Sulaiman Adebayo (popularly known as Pooja), firmly stating that the substitution was purely precautionary due to Osimhen’s physical discomfort. Post-match footage showing the striker limping appeared to support the coach’s explanation.
Despite the clarification, online chatter had already begun to swirl, with unverified claims of locker room tension. The coaching staff, however, maintained that the change was medically advised and not disciplinary.
Osimhen’s absence was deeply felt as Nigeria struggled to maintain rhythm and attacking sharpness in the second half and extra time. The match ended 1–1, and the Super Eagles were eventually edged out 6–5 in a tense penalty shootout, dashing their hopes of advancing to the 2026 intercontinental playoff.
Chelle also pointed to disruptive behavior by a DR Congo official during the shootout as a factor that added to the chaotic end of Nigeria’s campaign, further complicating an already emotionally charged evening for the team.
