Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) General Manager and ex-FIFA referee, Andile “Ace” Ncobo, is facing serious legal challenges following allegations of domestic violence. On June 28, 2025, Ncobo was arrested in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, after his 27-year-old partner accused him of assaulting her during a domestic dispute. The incident was reportedly witnessed by a minor, adding gravity to the charges.
Despite the complainant’s subsequent withdrawal of the charges and her statement expressing no fear for her safety, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to proceed with the case. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane emphasized the organization’s commitment to protecting victims of gender-based violence (GBV), stating that the prosecution will continue as per the NPA’s directive not to withdraw domestic violence-related cases.
During a court appearance on July 8, 2025, Magistrate Bella Letoaba released Ncobo on a warning, citing the complainant’s withdrawal statement. However, the court imposed strict conditions, including compliance with an existing protection order and a prohibition on contacting the complainant. The matter has been postponed to September 3 for further investigation.
This case is particularly notable given Ncobo’s involvement in initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of GBV. In November 2024, he launched a foundation dedicated to combating gender-based violence, highlighting a commitment to social issues. The current allegations have raised questions about the effectiveness of such initiatives and the challenges in addressing GBV within communities.
The NPA’s decision to continue with the prosecution, despite the complainant’s withdrawal, underscores the state’s commitment to upholding the Domestic Violence Act, which aims to provide maximum protection to victims. This approach reflects a broader strategy to ensure that cases of domestic violence are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted, regardless of the complainant’s stance.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case against Ncobo serves as a critical test of the justice system‘s ability to handle domestic violence allegations impartially and effectively, irrespective of the individuals involved. The outcome may have significant implications for future cases and the broader discourse on GBV in South Africa.
