Spain’s government has approved a new set of measures aimed at tackling rising housing costs and improving affordability, as pressure mounts on households across major cities. The announcement comes amid growing public concern over rent increases and limited access to affordable homes, particularly for young people and low income families.

Officials said the measures focus on expanding affordable housing supply, strengthening tenant protections and discouraging speculative practices in the property market. The plan includes incentives for developers to build social housing, limits on excessive rent hikes in high demand areas and support for regional governments to accelerate housing projects.

The government emphasized that housing affordability has become a key social and economic challenge, with rising costs threatening social cohesion and labor mobility. Authorities said the new steps are designed to balance tenant protection with maintaining investor confidence in the housing sector.

Housing advocates welcomed the move but cautioned that implementation and enforcement will be critical to achieving real impact. Economists also noted that while the measures could bring short term relief, long term affordability will depend on sustained construction and broader economic conditions.
