A tragic shooting incident occurred in Sehna village, Barnala district, Punjab, where Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta, a 40-year-old son of former sarpanch Malkit Kaur, was killed while sitting at a property dealer’s shop near the local bus stand. An armed assailant approached him and opened fire, resulting in his immediate death. After the shooting, the attacker managed to escape, prompting a heavy police presence in the area.
Sukhwinder was known for his vocal criticism of the AAP government’s policies and actively engaged in political discussions with figures such as Simranjit Singh Mann and Lakha Sidhana, focusing on issues vital to Punjab’s governance and identity. According to Barnala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohd Sarfaraz Alam, the main suspect, identified as Jinder Singh, had a known relationship with the victim. Eyewitness accounts indicated that both men arrived together at the site shortly before the shooting. The SSP suggested the motive for the crime appeared to be personal enmity, particularly following a recently surfaced video in which Jinder expressed grievances over a monetary dispute with Sukhwinder.
The aftermath of the incident has intensified concerns about public safety in Punjab, drawing criticism towards the AAP government from opposition leaders. Senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa condemned the shooting and called for the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to initiate a fair investigation by central agencies. The community of Sehna is left in shock over this violent loss, and authorities remain focused on apprehending the perpetrator and bringing them to justice, with ongoing investigations expected to yield further updates.
