The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has rejected the appointment of two alleged non-members as chairman and secretary of its membership mobilisation, revalidation, and registration committee, calling the move unconstitutional and a threat to party unity.

The party urged its national headquarters to avoid actions that could destabilise the state structure. “We strongly reject these appointments and will not allow such actions to stand without consultation or prior engagement with the leaders in the state,” the Sokoto ADC stated.

The appointees, Hon. Abdullahi Maigwandu as Chairman and Aliyu Muhammad Rabah as Secretary, have intensified tensions within the party, which is already embroiled in a factional dispute between Hon. Muhammad Faruk and Hon. Kegan, both claiming the state chairmanship.

Addressing journalists at the state secretariat on Monday, factional Chairman Hon. Faruk, alongside members of his executive committee, alleged the appointments violated the party’s constitution. He noted that both appointees were not card-carrying ADC members at the time of their appointment.

Faruk highlighted that Maigwandu had served as a commissioner under the immediate past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in Sokoto and was appointed to the committee a day after resigning from the PDP. Rabah also recently defected from the PDP before being named Secretary.

The Faruk-led faction maintained that the action undermines the authority of the recognised state leadership and disrespects loyal party members in Sokoto. The group appealed to state and local government executives to remain calm while it pursues legal action against what it described as attempts to hijack the party’s structure through undemocratic means.

They further warned members and the public against collecting membership cards not issued by the legitimate state leadership, noting such cards may be declared invalid.
