The Yobe State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal road crash that claimed six lives along the Potiskum–Damaturu highway on Thursday. Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when a truck reportedly drove against traffic and collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.

According to accounts from the scene, the Canter truck was in the wrong lane when the collision happened. Four occupants of the trailer were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others, traveling in the Canter truck, also lost their lives. Two additional persons survived the crash and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, said, “The accident occurred along the Potiskum–Damaturu highway involving a trailer and a Canter truck. Six people lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.” He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision and urged road users to adhere to traffic rules to prevent similar tragedies.

The incident highlights the growing concern over road safety in the state. Last October, seven people—including two children and a driver—died when a Sharon bus lost control and veered off the Gombe–Potiskum road, crashing into a bush.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of careful driving, adherence to traffic regulations, and vigilance on highways to reduce accidents involving multiple casualties.
