Vice President Kashim Shettima told the 2025 National Sanitation Conference in Abuja that Nigeria’s sanitation sector could grow to $14.23 billion by 2030 if the country embraces new ideas, stronger partnerships, and more private investment. He spoke through Inna Binta Audu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs.

Shettima said the Federal Government will keep working to speed up access to safe sanitation for all Nigerians. He warned that many people still do not have safe toilets and clean services, and that this harms health, dignity, and the nation’s progress.

He raised alarm about rising open defecation, saying it harms communities, pollutes drinking water, and lowers productivity. He cited a World Bank estimate that poor sanitation costs Nigeria about $3 billion every year.

The Vice President listed government programs to improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). These include the National Action Plan, P-WASH, School and Health WASH, SOAR-WASH, and the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign”. He added that 158 Local Government Areas are now “Open-Defecation-Free (ODF)”. He praised Katsina State for becoming the second state, after Jigawa, to earn full ODF certification.

Shettima said President Bola Tinubu’s government has placed WASH at the centre of development. The new Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation shows that commitment, he said.

He called on state and local governments to make national sanitation plans their own and to fund local solutions. He also urged the private sector to invest in waste-to-wealth projects, sanitation marketing, and green technologies.

Beyond new projects, Shettima stressed that lasting change depends on people’s behaviour. He said safe sanitation needs both facilities and a change in habits at community level.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s pledge to meet “SDG 6.2” by 2030 and said the federal government will boost funding, strengthen partnerships, and push for fast action. He asked conference participants to turn their plans into results.
