Vice President Kashim Shettima has described the defection of Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as personal and deeply touching, describing it as a moment of pride for the ruling party and the North East region.

Shettima made the remarks in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, during a grand reception organised to formally welcome Governor Kefas into the APC. He noted that the defection further strengthened the party’s presence in the North East geopolitical zone, which now has more governors under the APC platform.

The Vice President expressed optimism that the remaining governors of Adamawa and Bauchi states would, in due course, reconsider their political affiliations and align with the ruling party. He said such a development would further consolidate unity and progress within the region.

At the event, Shettima officially declared Governor Kefas as the leader of the APC in Taraba State and urged party members to close ranks and support him. According to him, such unity would empower the governor to continue his efforts at fostering peace, cohesion and development across the state.

Earlier, Governor Kefas explained that his decision to defect to the APC, alongside members of his cabinet, federal and state lawmakers, and local government officials, was driven by a desire to reposition Taraba State for growth and prosperity rather than personal political ambition.

He described President Bola Tinubu as a transformational leader whose vision aligns with the aspirations of Taraba people, adding that the state’s decision to join the APC was consistent with the Renewed Hope agenda of the current administration.

Also speaking, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, described the defection as a strategic move taken in the best interest of the people of Taraba State. He said the state’s rich resources would be better harnessed under the APC, marking a new phase of development and revitalisation.
