Seyi Makinde Meets Pdp State Chairs Ahead of Disputed National Convention

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party as the party prepares for its National Elective Convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16. The meeting took place at night at the Oyo State Government Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The delegation was led by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi from Edo State.

Aziegbemi thanked Governor Makinde for his steady efforts to hold the party together and praised his leadership. He said, “Governor Makinde has been the anchor of stability in our great party. His visionary leadership and dedication to inclusivity have not only strengthened the PDP, but have radiated across the nation,” he stated.

He added that the governor’s approach had helped the party navigate recent problems and promote reconciliation among members. Aziegbemi also used the phrase “visionary leadership and dedication to inclusivity,” to describe Makinde’s work for the party.

All state chairmen attended the meeting except the chairmen from Imo and Abia states, who have taken legal action against the party.

Earlier, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a halt to the planned national convention. In a judgment on October 31, Justice James Omotosho stopped the convention until the PDP meets the requirements of its own rules, the Constitution, and the Electoral Act. The judge also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting any report from a convention that did not follow the proper legal steps. That order followed a suit by three party members who said the party had not complied with due process.

Despite the Abuja ruling, the PDP obtained an ex parte order from an Oyo State High Court. On November 4, Justice A. L. Akintola allowed the party to go ahead with the convention in Ibadan and directed INEC to attend, monitor, and observe the event while the substantive motion is pending.

The meeting in Abuja underlined the divided legal landscape and showed the party’s effort to move forward while dealing with court challenges and internal disagreements.
