Senate President Urges Nigerians to Engage Elected Representatives for Effective Governance

The Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Nigerian Senate, has called on Nigerians to actively engage with their elected representatives, stressing that the Senate is not merely a theatre for debate but a workshop for solutions that address the nation’s challenges.

Delivering his welcome address during the adjourned plenary for the 2026 budget defence by Ministries Departments and Agencies, Akpabio emphasized that citizens’ input is vital in transforming grievances into policy and concerns into actionable programs. He noted that through effective representation the aspirations of farmers traders students and workers are reflected in government decisions.

“Distinguished colleagues Nigeria stands today at a moment that calls for clarity of purpose and steadfastness of spirit. The challenges before us are real. But history teaches us that great nations are built by those who confront difficulties with courage and determination,” Akpabio said.

He urged lawmakers to ensure that public resources are deployed to promote development strengthen institutions expand opportunities and improve citizens’ lives. He also reminded colleagues to debate with vigour but act with wisdom and to remain united in duty despite differences in opinion.

Highlighting the fragility of life, Akpabio said the recent deaths of notable figures underscore the enduring value of service to the people. He called for a patriotic devotion that reflects the trust placed in the Senate by Nigerians.

Concluding his remarks, he invoked the spirit of Ramadan and Lent to guide legislators’ character and actions, praying that deliberations in the Senate contribute to peace unity and prosperity for the country.
