Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure Segun Sowunmi has voiced concern over the party’s current direction, suggesting it is actively undermining its chances in the 2027 general elections.

During an interview on Friday, Sowunmi criticized the internal divisions plaguing the PDP, which has splintered into two rival camps. One faction is aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, while the other backs Umar Damagum as chairman.

Sowunmi lamented the party’s inability to unify and prepare effectively for the next electoral cycle. “We’re facing a massive challenge in positioning ourselves for success in 2027,” he said.

He pointed out that even smaller parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC), once dismissed as insignificant, are now outperforming the PDP in terms of cohesion and strategy. “We laughed at the ADC when they emerged, but now they’re proving more focused than we are,” he noted.

Sowunmi also warned against underestimating the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a potential disruptor within the party. “Atiku is capable of delivering a second shock to the PDP. Ignore him at your own peril,” he cautioned.

Sowunmi concluded that the PDP’s current behavior is steering it toward political irrelevance. “If you examine the situation closely, it’s clear the PDP is doing everything to make itself unelectable,” he said.
