In a decisive affirmation of her leadership, Fran Drescher has been re-elected as President of SAG-AFTRA, the union representing over 160,000 media professionals. Drescher, renowned for her role in “The Nanny,” secured 81% of the vote, defeating challenger Maya Gilbert-Dunbar. Joely Fisher was also re-elected as Secretary-Treasurer, receiving 70% of the vote.

Drescher’s re-election comes at a pivotal time for the entertainment industry, which is grappling with significant challenges. The union’s recent strike against major video game publishers, initiated in July 2024, concluded in July 2025 after members ratified a new agreement. This contract includes a 15.17% immediate pay increase, with additional 3% raises scheduled for November 2025, 2026, and 2027. Crucially, it introduces protections against the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate performers’ voices and likenesses.

The strike was precipitated by concerns over AI’s growing role in the gaming industry, particularly regarding the potential for AI to replace human performers. SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge against Llama Productions, a subsidiary of Epic Games, for using AI to recreate Darth Vader’s voice in “Fortnite” without prior union consultation.

These developments underscore the broader industry challenges, including the economic impact of the 2023 dual strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. The strikes led to significant financial losses and job cuts, with Southern California alone suffering a $6.5 billion economic hit and approximately 45,000 jobs disappearing.

In response to these challenges, hundreds of Hollywood professionals rallied in April 2025 to advocate for increased film and TV productions within California. They called on lawmakers to expand tax incentives and streamline filming permits to prevent further industry outsourcing.

Drescher’s leadership continues to be instrumental in navigating these complex issues, balancing the need for fair compensation and job security with the evolving technological landscape of the entertainment industry.
