The Rwanda National Police have issued a caution to Nigerian content creator Joe Bassey after he shared a video of himself sitting on a public road to showcase the cleanliness of streets in Rwanda.

The viral clip showed Bassey seated directly on an active roadway while recording a video, a move that quickly drew attention online and raised safety concerns among local authorities. While acknowledging the positive intention behind promoting Rwanda’s clean environment, the police stressed that the act violated road safety regulations and posed a significant risk.

In an official statement posted on its social media platform, the Rwanda National Police stated that although the intention behind the content was appreciated, recording in the middle of a roadway is unsafe and endangers both the individual and other road users. The statement advised that filming should always be carried out in designated safe areas to prevent accidents.

Authorities emphasized that occupying active roads, even for harmless or promotional content, could lead to serious consequences. They warned that such actions may disrupt traffic flow and increase the likelihood of crashes, particularly if drivers are distracted or unable to react in time.

The police further noted that the incident highlights the growing need for content creators and social media influencers to prioritise public safety when producing viral or attention grabbing material. As online platforms continue to shape modern storytelling and tourism promotion, authorities urged creators to remain mindful of local laws and safety guidelines.

The caution serves as a reminder that adherence to traffic regulations is essential, regardless of intent. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that roads remain secure for all users.
