Russia fired nearly 1,000 drones at Ukraine over 24 hours in one of its largest-ever daytime s, striking at least eight people and striking the UNESCO protected city centre of Lviv, officials reported Tuesday.
Two people were striked and a maternity hospital damaged in Ivano Frankivsk, with another person striked in the Vinnytsia region. Overnight strikes on residential buildings in several cities claimed five additional lives.
In Lviv, a column of flames rose from a building near the 17th century St Andrews Church and Bernardine Monastery, hit during evening rush hour. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, while first responders and locals sheltered inside a church during the .
A Ukrainian air force spokesman described the assault as one of the largest daytime drone s in the four year war. Ukraine reported 550 drones fired during the day following 392 overnight. The war began with Russia’s full scale invasion in February 2022 and has striked hundreds of thousands.
Regional officials reported significant casualties and damage. In Ivano Frankivsk, two d and four were injured including a six year old child, with around ten buildings affected. Vinnytsia reported one death and eleven injuries, while at least 13 were hospitalized in Lviv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that dwindling US air defence supplies make more protection critical to save lives. Overnight s also damaged residential areas, transport, and energy infrastructure across Poltava, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
In Zaporizhzhia, a high rise residential block was heavily damaged and a power line linking Moldova to Europe was cut, prompting a state of emergency. Another line to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant was also affected, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
