Russia has reportedly destroyed no fewer than 125 Ukrainian drones over its territory in a large-scale attack. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry disclosed this on Sunday, with regional governors confirming some damage but no casualties from the incidents.

According to a post on its official Telegram channel, the ministry detailed that 125 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems. The bulk of these UAVs were shot down over the Volgograd region in southern Russia, where 67 drones were neutralized.

Governor Andrey Bocharov of the Volgograd region reported that debris from the intercepted drones caused grass fires in the area. However, he reassured the public that no casualties or significant infrastructure damage occurred as a result of the attack.

This recent drone offensive marks one of the most intense UAV operations launched by Ukraine over Russian territory since the start of the conflict between the two nations. While Ukraine has previously targeted military and logistical facilities inside Russia, the scale of this assault appears to signal an escalation in tactics. Ukrainian officials have not provided further details on the objectives of the drone strikes or the specific targets that were engaged.

Russia’s air defense systems have been increasingly put to the test by the frequent use of drones in the ongoing war, and this latest incident demonstrates the growing role of UAVs in modern warfare. The use of drones, particularly for reconnaissance and targeted strikes, has become a significant component of Ukraine’s military strategy, aimed at disrupting Russian logistics and military assets.

South African opposition chief Julius Malema convicted on firearm offenses, could face 15 years in prison; sentencing scheduled for January 2026.

Despite the high number of drones intercepted, the lack of casualties or widespread damage in Russia is a relief for many, though the situation remains tense. Both Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a grinding conflict since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, with frequent air strikes, artillery exchanges, and ground operations characterizing the protracted war.

The destruction of these drones comes as the international community continues to push for a diplomatic resolution to the war, which has led to thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people. However, incidents like these suggest that the conflict is far from over, with both sides continuing to escalate their military actions in pursuit of strategic advantage.
