In a significant diplomatic engagement on the sidelines of the BRICS Council gathering in Rio de Janeiro, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commended China for its pivotal role in steering global change away from colonial and neocolonial paradigms. Meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, Lavrov emphasized the necessity of transitioning from a unipolar world dominated by Western powers to a multipolar system grounded in sovereign equality among nations.
Lavrov highlighted China’s leadership in promoting global transformation, stating, “Today, China is one of the main drivers of global change, and perhaps such change is indeed necessary.” He echoed Wang Yi’s perspective on the ongoing struggle between nations striving to maintain a unipolar system and those advocating for a multipolar world order.
Both ministers underscored the importance of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in facilitating this shift. They agreed on the need to strengthen these multilateral mechanisms to enhance the influence of the Global South and promote equitable global governance.
The meeting also touched upon the upcoming 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II. Lavrov informed Wang Yi of Russia’s preparations for President Xi Jinping’s official visit during the commemorative events, emphasizing the shared responsibility to uphold the principles of international justice and peace.
This diplomatic interaction reflects the deepening strategic partnership between Russia and China, united in their vision of a more balanced and just international order.
