Marco Rubio has accused Iran of attempting to hold the world hostage through its retaliatory military strikes as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

Speaking during an event at the United States Department of State, Rubio said the Iranian leadership poses a serious threat not only to the region but also to global security. According to him the recent missile and drone s carried out by Iran against neighboring countries demonstrate the scale of the danger.

Rubio stated that Iran has been targeting nearby nations along with their energy infrastructure and civilian populations. He said the United States and its allies are working toward ending Iran’s ability to continue such s.

The United States alongside Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28 in a major escalation of the ongoing conflict. During the Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly ed, marking a dramatic turning point in the confrontation.

Since the strikes Iran has responded with a wave of missiles and drones directed at Israel and several Gulf Arab countries where American military bases are located. The continued exce of s has increased fears of a wider regional war and disruptions to global energy supply.

Rubio emphasized that the mission of the United States and its partners is to dismantle Iran’s capacity to threaten other countries and deilize the region. He said the military objectives of the campaign are already progressing toward that goal.

The Secretary of State made the remarks while attending an event honoring Americans who were wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad. Among those remembered was Robert Levinson, who disappeared in 2007 on Kish Island.

The United States government concluded in 2020 that Iranian authorities were involved in Levinson’s presumed death. Levinson was initially believed to be investigating cigarette counterfeiting though reports later suggested he had links to the Central Intelligence Agency and may have been gathering intelligence.

Rubio said Levinson’s case serves as a reminder of the nature of the Iranian government and its long history of confrontations with the United States including the 1979 hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran.

As the conflict continues global leaders remain concerned about the possibility of further escalation that could impact international security economic ility and energy markets.
