Real Madrid CF have confirmed that Brazilian winger Rodrygo will miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury.

The Spanish giants announced on Tuesday that medical examinations revealed the forward sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right leg. The injury occurred during Madrid 1 0 home defeat to Getafe in a La Liga clash on Monday. Rodrygo came on as a substitute and initially remained on the pitch despite discomfort but further tests confirmed the severity of the damage.

The 25 year old had only recently returned from a month long spell on the sidelines due to tendonitis making the latest setback particularly devastating for both club and country. He is now expected to undergo surgery and face a lengthy rehabilitation period ruling him out of the global tournament scheduled to take place in the United States this summer.

Brazil who are five time world champions will have to adjust their plans without the dynamic winger. The absence is also a major blow to Real Madrid who are already coping without French forward Kylian Mbappe due to a knee sprain.

With crucial fixtures ahead including a Champions League last 16 encounter against Manchester City FC at the Santiago Bernabeu Madrid will rely heavily on available attackers such as Vinicius Junior and emerging talents within the squad.

Rodrygo injury marks a significant setback in what had been another promising season for the Brazilian star.
